This session will provide an interactive workshop to provide an opportunity to discuss and problem-solve the ways in which domestic abuse shelters provide services to people with disabilities. In many cases, agencies feel unprepared, unequipped, or simply uncomfortable working with a variety of different disability types, and disABILITY Resource Center wants to collaborate with you to unpack the fears you might have when working with people with disabilities. We do not have all of the answers, but by working together we can promote positive change and creative solutions.
Room 403 | Social Advocacy Track
Re-entry programs that do not address the root causes of incarceration fail to foster skills that reduce the risk of returning to abusive relationships and substance abuse, therefore increasing recidivism. Focusing exclusively on employment skills and housing overlooks the need to address and mental health, relationship dynamics, isolation from support systems, and the impacts of trauma that lead to unhealthy or illegal activity. This training will review supportive re-entry programs for incarcerated victims of domestic and sexual violence that are proven to reduce recidivism.
