“For Better or For Worse: The Dualistic Influence of Religiosity on Romantic Relationships”

This presentation will consist of a critical review of current research that has examined the positive (e.g., increased commitment, increased unity, etc.) and negative (e.g., submission of wives, minimization of male violence, etc.) roles that one’s faith plays in relationship dynamics within committed romantic relationships. Current scholarship on this topic will be discussed as well as gaps that have been identified in existing research. This presentation will also include implications and recommendations for lay and practitioner audience members and present opportunities for attendees to ask questions following the presentation.

“Preparing Successful Petitions for Domestic Violence Survivors”

Professor Jo Ann Lehberger and student attorneys of the UT Domestic Violence Clinic will discuss helping pro se individuals make informed decisions about their order of protection cases. The discussion will focus on preparing successful petitions for orders of protection. Presenters will discuss the order of protection process, explain the relevant domestic violence statutes, and teach participants about the critical legal elements that each petitioner must prove for a judge to award both a temporary and full order of protection. Using a realistic scenario, attendees will discuss preparing a sample petition. Participants will receive handouts that will help them assist domestic violence victims in the order of protection process.

“ACEs and Trauma-Informed Approaches”

This presentation will provide participants increased knowledge on the topic of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) as well as the effects of trauma on brain development and attachment. It will assist those working in the field of intimate partner violence prevention to increase their understanding of the impact and intersection of past and current trauma on their clients. This presentation will explore trauma-informed approaches as well as self-care techniques for both professionals and their clients.
