Sessions
Room 413/Ballroom | Social Advocacy Track
This symposium will highlight UT Knoxville faculty and student research on barriers to survivors and their children’s engagement in formal help-seeking. The symposium will begin with an overview of help-seeking, followed by presentations about IPV help-seeking among Black men, Black LGBTQ women, and a retrospective study of help-seeking among young adults exposed to childhood IPV. We will conclude with participants discussing the findings and how they compare to their experiences as providers and brainstorming how they might apply what was presented in their setting.
Room 406 | Legal Track
This training will emphasize the necessity that any individual or group that works with victims of domestic violence—whether in law enforcement, the judiciary, victim advocacy, or community outreach—must understand: why perpetrators strangle, the traumatic impact on victims, and the potential for lethality. Emphasis will be placed on why strangulation is all too common in domestic intimate partner relationships, how difficult it is to prosecute, and the implications of our criminal statute establishing this act to be a felony offense.
Room 400A | Community Engagement Track
This session will begin with an insider’s discussion of why so many congregations are so ill-equipped to effectively manage incidents of domestic violence. The presentation will explore four theological themes that address domestic violence. Attention will be given to countering troubling scriptures that are misused to promote domestic violence. The presentation will provide theological insights and scriptures that counter domestic violence.
Room 403 | Community Engagement Track
This training session will focus on intimate partner violence (IPV) and its impact on a women’s health. The presentation will focus on IPV and pregnant women. Participants will learn how to identify IPV and the importance of healthcare screening for IPV. The presentation will provide techniques for trauma-informed practices in the healthcare setting and information on local resources.
